The Mushroom Farm believes in self-sufficiency and a permaculture lifestyle. We are 100% off-grid. Our water comes from a natural spring, our electricity is from the sun, and we use composting methods to feed our gardens, which in turn, gives us nutritional and organic produce.
We are also a community based social enterprise. This means that the profits created by the lodge are fed back into the community.
The Mushroom Farm currently supports: eighteen full-time staff members, Three Primary school teachers, Three nursery school teachers & nursery school feeding program, two secondary school students, one university student, Manchewe Lions Football team, Manchewe Mountain Mama’s women’s Empowerment & sewing group, and Manchewe Made orphan Boys jewelry program. We also give out micro-loans and payment programs to staff and community members to assist development in the area. The manchewe waterfalls Hydro-Electrify project is our newest project; inquire at the bar for more info!
Meet the owners We (Maddy & Cameron McAllister, siblings) bought the Mushroom Farm from founder Mickie Wild on summer solstice 2013. Long story short, Maddy had graduated from University of Asheville, North Carolina in international studies; Cameron was working in alternative building… we were both pretty bored and yearning to return to Africa after prior volunteer experience (Ghana & Tanzania). So, Maddy googled ‘lodges for sale in malawi’ in October 2012… and here we are!
Kyle met Maddy while living in Nkata Bay in 2015-- they hit it off and Kyle has now become part of the Mushroom Family! We have all plopped ourselves into the farm completely naively, and have enjoyed the best months of our lives thus far. Our guests are truly special travelers; our local communities have welcomed us incredibly; and other lodge owners in Malawi have helped us out in so many ways. Not to mention our friends, old and new, who stay a while and help out. Each day, we pinch ourselves to be living such amazing lives. We welcome you to enjoy this special respite, in the best part of the warm heart of Africa!
