sustainable tourism

At Mushroom Farm we do our best to be intentional + thoughtful about our impact on the environment + local community. We believe in utilizing the natural resources available to us + are continuously educating ourselves on the improvements we can make. The farm is a community-based lodge, that empowers individuals through stable + fair paid employment opportunities. Thank you for choosing to stay with us on the mountain!

solar power

The Mushroom Farm is powered completely by the sun. We have 9 solar panels and 4 batteries that keep the music playing, fridge working, lights shining + charging stations going. During the rainy season the beer might not be as freezing old, but we believe thats a small price to pay for clean electricity!

spring water

The farm is extremely fortunate to have its own natural spring that supplies us throughout the year with clean drinking water. We have a large holding tank at the source of the spring, where water is gravity fed into two large water tanks. These tanks then feed water into all of our taps around the camp.

Even though our natural spring supplies us with plenty of water, we also use grey water filter practices to not waste any water. We have a grease filter connected to our kitchen sink which collects the grease and solid waste, and a similar filter for the shower and laundry area. The remaining grey water is then filtered through our two sand and reed bed filters. After the water is filtered, it is completely safe to use to water our flower gardens throughout the dry season.

compost toilets

Compost toilets are a waterless way to produce organic, rich fertilizer to use on fruit trees, flowers and coffee plants. There are no septic tanks or wasted water. After one of the two chambered toilets is full, it is sealed. After 7 months the waste has transformed into an odorless organic fertilizer.

permaculture | piggery | hen house

Our onsite organic permagardens are something that shouldn't be missed when you come to the farm. Since we purchased the land in 2015, our amazing gardeners [Sutulani, Esaya, Gift, and Lumbani] have been transforming the space into what it is today. We offer a free permagarden tour 3 times a week, led by the gardeners themselves. They will walk you through the many terraced beds full of lush vegetables, medicinal plants, and herbs, as well as our natural ponds, fruit orchard, and green house.

As part of seeking a permaculture lifestyle, the farm also keeps pigs and chickens. Our pigs are given kitchen scraps and leftover food from the restaurant and in turn we receive nitrogen rich manure for our gardens. Our chickens are spoiled and are fed fresh salad twice a day, and to show us their gratitude they provide us with 17 eggs a day [as well as chicken manure].

The Mushroom Farm Restaurant utilizes our homegrown organic veggies, as well as our fresh eggs to make healthy delicious meals. A full, closed loop system!
